PRCS volunteers in Hebron revive the Musaharati tradition

Palestine Red Crescent Society volunteers in Hebron take part in several diverse activities, with new outstanding activities seeing the light every day in the city’s streets as part of achievements realized by the Youths & Volunteers’ Departments at PRCS.

When Ramadan started this year, PRCS volunteers decided to revive the Al Musaharati tradition: Al Musaharati is a person who roams the streets with a drum late at night during the holy month of Ramadan in order to wake people up so that they can have a last meal before the sun goes up. Hence, PRCS volunteers took up drums, tambourines and cymbals in an attempt to maintain an ancient religious tradition linked to Palestinian customs.

Jawdat Al Muhtasseb, coordinator, expressed his joy at this new tie between the Red Crescent and the Ramadan Crescent. He valued the role played by volunteers in reviving this tradition which was welcomed and commended by Hebronites. PRCS volunteers will continue to play the role of Musaharati until the end of Ramadan, he said, because they believe in the importance of safeguarding Palestinian and Moslem heritage. Hebronites also expressed their satisfaction at the numerous activities organized and implemented by volunteers during the holy month of Ramadan in cooperation with many national institutions.

The Youths & Volunteers Department/Hebron is one of the main youths centers in the Governorate providing community-based voluntary action to help enhance and maintain voluntary action by youths in cooperation with local institutions and the local community.

Khadr Abou Sbeih, Head of the Department, lauded the efforts made by staff and volunteers at PRCS/Hebron which receive full support from PRCS. “The numerous activities and events implemented by Youth & Volunteers Committees in Palestine, through PRCS programs and partnerships with national institutions in various cities and towns, serve many population categories”, he said.

Mr. Haroon Al Joulani, General Director of PRCS/Hebron, also praised the role played by volunteers and lauded partnerships with Palestinian institutions. He said that the Al Musaharati tradition and many other initiatives implemented by youths at PRCS fall within the Society’s responsibility to safeguard Palestinian human and cultural heritage. On behalf of the branch’s administrative committee, he wished Hebronites in particular and Palestinians in general a Ramadan Kareem.
