In the presence of the French Foreign Minister The Palestine Red Crescent signs an agreement for the reconstruction of Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza

Jerusalem – The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and the French Development Agency signed an agreement on 18 November 2009 in the French Consulate at Jerusalem for the reconstruction of the Al-Quds Hospital in the Gaza Strip. The hospital was destroyed due to the recent Israeli war on the Strip.

The agreement, signed by the French Foreign Minister, Mr. Bernard Kouchner; the Director of the French Development Agency, Mr. Herve Conan; and the PRCS Vice President, Dr. Abdullah Sabri, states that the French Foreign Ministry has provided two million Euros through the French Development Agency to support the renovation of the destroyed hospital.

Mr. Kouchner praised the efforts of the PRCS staff during and in the aftermath of the war on the Gaza Strip, and their role in easing the suffering of Palestinians.

Mr. Kouchner also pointed out that this contribution by the French Foreign Ministry was already discussed between the Palestinian National Authority President, Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, and the French President during the former’s visit to France. Consequently, France sent an assessment mission to determine the French contribution in the hospital’s reconstruction.

The French Foreign Minister revealed that France had received commitment from the Israeli authorities to facilitate the delivery of material and equipments necessary for the reconstruction of the hospital. He stressed on the necessity to follow up on the implementation of this initiative.
France pledged to contribute to the rebuilding of the Al-Quds Hospital during the Sharm el-Sheikh summit held in March 2009, under the auspices of the French President Nicolas Sarkozy, in support of the Palestinian economy for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip
