Sabreen Al Soufi: Volunteering in the Girls’ Club is my Biggest Achievement

Sabreen Al Soufi started volunteering at the Society’s branch in Rafah seven years ago. She is a trainer in the Girls’ Club, a youth initiative implemented under the Life Skills Program with support from the Dutch Red Cross. The Club aims at providing girls with a safe and suitable space to exchange experiences and stories in an educational setting that enables them to freely discuss life issues and to acquire the necessary skills to carry out income generating activities.

“For me, volunteering is all about being generous, caring, proactive, and willing to build social ties with others. Helping and educating others makes me happy, especially when I see the appreciation on their faces.  I was a bit nervous when I first became a trainer, but after I attended a number of training courses to improve my work as a trainer things became easier. I have gained a lot of confidence and am now better equipped to communicate with trainees. I am proud of this new experience as a trainer at the Girls’ Club and I hope to enhance my skills in this field”, Sabreen said.

Sabreen explained that the youth-oriented activities she carries out alongside other volunteers help them develop their personalities and overcome the challenges posed by life the Gaza Strip. By volunteering, they contribute to empowering and educating youths about their rights in order to bring about change in their communities and influence decision makers. She spoke about how several young women made their voices heard and influenced decision-makers to change policies and enact laws to promote the rights of disadvantaged groups. They could do so, she said, because they harnessed the skills they learned from courses promoting life and leadership skills.

“Volunteering with PRCS is a great personal achievement. It is also extremely beneficial to my community. I will continue volunteering and will seek to learn and employ new skills to build resilience in local communities and among girls in particular to enable them to face the hardships that prevail in the Gaza Strip”, Sabreen concluded.
