PRCS Elected as Member of IFRC’s Governing Board

(Antalya/Al-Bireh– 6/11/2017): Under the leadership of PRCS’ President Dr. Younis Al Khatib, PRCS was elected today to the membership of IFRC’s Governing Board at the 21st IFRC General Assembly held in Antalya in Turkey.

Dr. Al Khatib expressed his joy at this election and said that PRCS shall represent Palestine in this key international humanitarian body which comprises 190 members representing national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. “I would like to dedicate this victory to all PRCS’ staff and volunteers who make great sacrifices every day in both Palestine and the Diaspora in order to allay the suffering of Palestinians and to safeguard their dignity despite the tremendous difficulties faced by all Palestinians”, he said.

Al Khatib added that this victory reflects widespread acknowledgement of the unique humanitarian efforts made by PRCS in the field at the national, regional and international levels.

IFRC’s Governing Board holds elections every four years. The Board comprises 25 members including the President of IFRC and its four Vice-Presidents in addition to 20 National Society representatives from four regions: Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe.

Founded in Paris in 1919 in the aftermath of WW1, IFRC was the expression of solidarity and humanitarian cooperation between nascent National Societies. It was created to serve individuals and communities in times of peace and war through the provision of various humanitarian, medical and social services.
