(Gaza - 19/10/2017): In cooperation with ICRC, PRCS’ Disaster Management Coordination Unit (DMCU) held a training course on “Guidelines for Joint Disaster Relief and Emergency Response” with the participation of 30 volunteers from the Society’s five branches in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking about the course, Abdel Aziz Abou Eysheh, DMCU Director in the Gaza Strip, said: “This three-day course (27 hours) covered an array of topics including assessment and relief tools, methods and standards, urgent relief interventions aimed at assisting displaced populations and people whose homes were demolished by Israeli occupation forces, and the risks posed by mines. It also covered safe assessment processes and included an introduction to the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. A training exercise was organized at the end of the course. The course aimed at enhancing volunteers’ capacities to prepare for and actively respond to disasters by intervening swiftly and by accurately assessing the needs of affected populations with the help of new computerized techniques”.
Areej abou Jiab, a 27 year-old volunteer who participated in the course, said: “Back in 2014, I took part in efforts aimed at assessing the needs of displaced populations. This course taught me about more effective assessment and response tools and enhanced the skills needed to deal with displaced populations and provide them with shelters. The course covered other topics such as the management of relief interventions during both the assessment and response phases in order to effectively determine and meet the basic humanitarian needs of affected populations”.
